Oh, Winter! How I Love Thee!: A Hike and a Snow Walk

Winter is finally here!!!  Real, honest to goodness snow – the kind that actually stays for more than 3 hours before it melts – finally fell here in Virginia last Tuesday and this past Saturday: I’m as giddy as a fat kid in a candy store!

The Joy in Trail Names: A Hike Through Cunningham Falls State Park

In general, one can pretty much assume what kind of hike/climb/trek they’re going to have when they read the name of the trail they’ll be venturing along – at least within the States.  In this case, we chose Old Misery Trail.  Mmhm.Old Misery Trail at Cunningham Falls State Park - Maryland Continue reading

Angry Muscles, Three States in One Day, Brews, and More White Stuff

Sun reflecting off a creek in the forest of Bull Run Marina State Park, Virginia

Somehow I convinced myself that 45 minutes on the bike shouldn’t affect my morning hike on Saturday. I was very, very wrong. Continue reading

Oh, Random Weather of Virginia (short entry)

I’m beginning to think Mother Nature might need some lithium, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines. These are used to treat Bipolar Disorder, which I’ve decided that Mother Nature has.  In the past 7 days, we’ve gone from 60-degree weather to 12-degree weather and we’re heading back into 60-degree weather this weekend.  We’ve gone from  sunshine to snowflakes to wind and back to sunshine.  Maybe Mother Nature just needs a hug?

Billy Goat A Trail at C&O Canal Park

I’d like to give a wee shout out to the Tattooed Lady for her most stellar recommendation to hike Billy Goat Trail.  Ice, snow, a bit of a breeze, a mother load of rocks to scramble over, and one might just call this a killer day. Continue reading

Finally!  After nine years -gag me with a spoon: cannot believe I’ve been in VA that long- I made it out to Great Falls Park for a hike/scramble/walk.  I’ve had people telling me it was beautiful, awesome, magnificent, etc.  I’m so glad they weren’t full of crap! Continue reading

A Long Weekend with Wildlife, Snow, and a Smidge Bit of Trespassing

It’s apparent to me, and Roomie, that I have an affinity for trespassing. Granted, I’m not trespassing on sensitive government property – I don’t need to see a nuclear reactor up close, thank you – but I find all the cool things to be where you aren’t necessarily supposed to go. Continue reading
